12 Fun Ideas for a Memorable First Date

First dates are all about making an impression. There’s something about dinner or a movie that just doesn’t cut it. Your first date should be memorable. It should allow you to get to know the other person and be able to figure out if there’s going to be a second date. So, go ahead and ask them out, and take them on one of these unconventional first dates:

  1. Wall-climbing: If your date is sporty and adventurous, they’ll love this.
  2. Sign up for a cooking/baking class!: The two of you can learn together, and have fun at the same time. There’s something about cooking together that can bring two people together.
  3. Play board games: Games are a great way to break the ice (Exactly why we have Icebreaker Games on SwoonMe!) You don’t want awkward silences on a first date, do you? Find a cozy cafe that has board games or carry your own.
  4. Plan a picnic: Show them that you’re willing to make an effort. Find out their preferences beforehand — they’ll appreciate the hell out of it.
  5. Try street food together: Walk around, experiment with different foods, and get to know each other in between bites. Make sure you try out popular spots, though — nothing like an upset tummy to ruin a first date!
  6. Live music: Find out what kind of music they like. Take them to a concert, music festival, or a gig at your favorite bar.
  7. Watch a play: Pick something neither of you has watched before. Whether it’s good or bad, you’ll have something to talk about either way.
  8. Stand-up comedy: Laughter is the best medicine, right? For a first date, too.
  9. Restaurant and bar hopping: Just dinner may be predictable, but hopping from one restaurant to another can add some fun to the evening. Pick a spot that has a lot of great restaurants and bars. That way, you have a lot of options that are within walking distance, and there’s some room for spontaneity.
  10. Go dancing: Either sign up for a dance class or take them somewhere y’all can let loose and say goodbye to them first-date jitters.
  11. Karaoke: Karaoke is not about showing off your great singing voice. It’s about real people signing, irrespective of how they sound. Take them to karaoke night, and sing your hearts out!
  12. Draw, paint, create!: Pottery classes, drawing at a cafe, or just doodling — work on some sort of creative project together. When you’re focusing on the task at hand, conversation comes naturally without all the overthinking.
